Google dropped app support for the first two Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025. They still heat and cool on the schedule they had, and the dial still works. You just can’t reach them from your phone.
NoLongerEvil puts new firmware on the thermostat so it has an app again. A 2nd gen is fairly painless: set it on its wall plate, plug in a micro-USB cable, hold the screen, and let the installer run. A 1st gen has to come apart, and you’ll be bridging two points on the board with tweezers.
On a 1st gen, unplug the battery before you do that. It’s the easiest way to short the board.
What to do
- Read the install guide all the way through first.
- Get the installer from the releases page.
- Pick where it reports to: NoLongerEvil’s free hosted service, which they run, or your own server or Home Assistant add-on.
This ends any Google warranty, and a 1st gen can get bricked if the teardown goes wrong. The maintainers say a failed flash can usually be recovered.
